After purchasing the e-Vignette, the vehicle is automatically registered in the electronic system. Checks are carried out electronically on motorways and therefore no physical document is required. However, it is advisable to carry a proof of purchase in case of a manual check.

Driving on toll motorways without a valid vignette can lead to fines. The amount of the fine can vary and can be collected locally or sent by post to the vehicle owner's address. It is strongly recommended to always have a valid vignette before entering a toll motorway.

If a mistake is made in entering the registration number when buying a vignette, no changes can be made to the data, including the registration number, once the vignette has started to be valid. Therefore, if an error is made, a new vignette with the correct details must be purchased. It is important to note that the original vignette, even if not used, will not be returned and no refund will be given.

The Austrian police use several methods to check the validity of vignettes without stopping vehicles.

3. Digital vignettes: In Austria, it is also possible to purchase digital vignettes that are linked to the vehicle registration plate. In this case, the systems check the validity of the vignette through the vehicle database without the need to physically check the vignette on the vehicle.
4. Mobile checks: In addition to stationary checkpoints, Austrian authorities can also carry out mobile checks on the validity of vignettes. This involves the use of mobile checking units which can be deployed at various locations on motorways.

It is important to remember that while this technology allows for efficient and quick checks, there is still the possibility that you will be stopped for a manual check by the traffic police if deemed necessary. Therefore, it is always important to have a valid vignette correctly placed on the vehicle.

The validity of vignettes is checked to a much greater extent by automated systems that can read both the number of the car and the country of registration. In the event of an irregularity, expect to be asked to pay a fine of between €120 and €800 per infringement within a period of 20 days to 2 months. For this reason, we strongly urge clients to fill in all the details carefully (type of car, country of registration, registration number, date of validity) in several places. We understand that it may be unfair to pay a fine even if there is a difference in the data, e.g. a single letter or a selected country. However, automation makes it necessary to take the need for correct data as a fact.

The Austrian digital vignette is valid throughout Austria, with the exception of the special toll sections : Highway 9 Pyhrn including Bosruck and the Gleinalm tunnel, A 10 Tauern Autobahn including Tauern and the Katschberg tunnel, Autobahn 11 Karawanken, Brenner Highway 13 including Europabrücke, S 16 Arlberg Schnellstraße including the Arlberg road tunnel.
