What to check for the trip?

In Austria, the following conditions and compulsory equipment are set for drivers:

  • Daytime running lights: motorcycles must always have their low beam headlights on, other vehicles in reduced visibility and in all tunnels.
  • Reflective vest: Mandatory for the driver, recommended for passengers.
  • Warning triangle: compulsory, in the event of a breakdown, placed at least 50 m behind the vehicle (100 m on the motorway).
  • Car first aid kit: mandatory, must be intact and in original packaging. The contents are not defined by law, ÖAMTC approved first aid kits are recommended.
  • Winter tyres: compulsory from 1. November to 15. April in winter conditions (snow, ice, frost). The minimum tread depth of winter tyres is 4 mm. Snow chains only allowed on roads covered with snow or ice, studded tyres allowed.
  • Child car seat: compulsory for children up to 150 cm or 14 years, children over 135 cm can sit on a booster seat.
  • It is also important to observe the speed limits (50 km/h in the municipality, 100 km/h outside the municipality, 130 km/h on the motorway) and to follow the rules for alcohol consumption at the wheel (0.099 ‰ for new drivers or professionals, 0.49 ‰ for other drivers).
  • On-board cameras and the use of radar detectors are also banned in Austria
